When an autistic person is struggling to process too much information at one time, this can lead to feelings of heightened anxiety and overwhelm.  Those feelings can result in changes of behaviour which are labelled as meltdowns. An autism meltdown is an uncontrollable, overwhelming reaction to emotional or sensory stress, not a tantrum, where a person loses control of their behaviour. It stems from a central nervous system overload caused by too much sensory input or stress.

The autistic meltdown can happen to an individual regardless of their age. Please remember this is not a tantrum, or temper outburst, it is an uncontrollable reaction.

A meltdown is a loss of control and can look different for each person, and might include:

Below listed some, but not all triggers. These triggers do not have to be present at the same time. Autistic meltdowns can happen in any life situation like at home, in school or at work, regardless of person age.

Prioritize safety: Ensure the person cannot hurt themselves or others.
